summary
Aspen is the current leader of the Arcadian Archive, an ancient library that contains and guards all forms of dangerous knowledge or magic. Any fact or spell considered to pose too great a risk to the world at large is confiscated and stored within its walls. As the head of the Archive (which grants him the title of Librarian), Aspen holds exclusive power to grant access to the Archive's contents, as well as to determine which new forms of magic or knowledge should be sealed within.
→ Background
• The third son of a merchant family; Aspen was expected to receive little inheritance, so his parents emphasized math and writing so he would better be able to strike out on his own.
• At a young age he was found to have a talent for magic; however, his skills lied with utilitarian forms of magic, rather than something that would allow him to easily find work as a soldier or healer.
• Aspen's fondness for reading, combined with his tendency to use his magic to better prowl through the mundane libraries he had access to, eventually attracted the attention of Ivy, the at-the-time Librarian of the Archive.
• Ivy took Aspen in as her apprentice, training him to eventually take over the role of Librarian.
• However, Ivy died at an unexpectedly young age, only five years into Aspen's apprenticeship. While the title of Librarian passed onto Aspen, he was considered unusually young and inexperienced for the role.
• Aspen has maintained the Archive in the decade since Ivy's passing, and to outward appearances everything is proceeding as normal.
• Something he keeps secret is that Ivy's death broke something fundamental in the Archive. Knowledge and magic that has long since been erased from the outside world is reemerging. While he pretends that he's doing normal Librarian work, he actually spends most of his time tracking down 'escaped' knowledge and resealing it, and searching for a way to undo the damage.

• Aspen has a daughter, but she can be easily excluded from a PSL; she is even more optional than the rest of his backstory
• The fantasy aspects of the setting can be dropped to play him in a strictly historical setting
• Regardless of settings, Aspen will have little to no direct political, economic, or combat power; instead he will have a lot of influence due to his ability to grant to deny access to the archive

tl;dr: High fantasy setting with some light steampunk aspects and the possibility of an apocalypse looming in the background. Magic exists and can be learned by anyone, but an innate talent for it is pretty rare.

• Younger characters (20ish and younger) can be taken on as Aspen's apprentice
• Alternately, Aspen can develop CR with the parent/older sibling of his new apprentice
• Magic users, academics, and politically powerful characters can petition Aspen for access to the Archives
• Aspen can seek out politically powerful characters (anything from literal kings to crime syndicate leaders) for protection
• And of course we can plot something together, or you can hit me with your own ideas!
